The National Institutes of Health Loan Repayment Program (LRP) provides support to health professionals in order to repay their student loans via five (5) extramural programs:
Clinical Research
Pediatric Research
Health Disparities Research
Contraception and Infertility Research
Clinical Research for Individuals from Disadvantaged Backgrounds
The intent of this program is to inspire health professionals to pursue careers in biomedical, behavioral, social, and clinical research. Criteria of the extramural programs:
- Applicant must commit at least two (2) years to conducting qualified research funded by a domestic nonprofit organization or U.S. federal, state, or local government entity
- Up to $35,000 of qualified student loan debt (including most undergraduate, graduate, and medical school loans) may be supported annually
- Loan is in addition to institutional salary received for research
- Applicant may only submit one (1) LRP application to one (1) program per NIH fiscal year (September - October)
- Applicant must devote > 50% effort to research for two (2) years
- Application submission deadline becomes due each fiscal year between September 1 - November 15
- On the last day of the submission deadline, the application must be submitted via the LRP online site by 8:00 p.m. (Eastern Time Zone)

Duke Submission Process:
- Applicant is responsible for application submission via the LRP online site
- Applicant must submit either by e-mail (gcmail@mc.duke.edu) or fax (919-684-6278) the Duke NIH Loan Repayment Program Form
- Form is due to ORA by November 29 in the fiscal year application is submitted
- Institutional Base Salary (debt must be > 20% of IBS) is required
- Chair / Business Manager signature will need to be obtained
- Form is DUE to ORA by November 29 in the fiscal year application is submitted
